Alcohol and Drugs

Alcohol misuse has a major impact on the local population. In Telford and Wrekin, 34% of men and 17% of women are defined as binge drinkers. Nationally, there is also growing concern about the number of adults and young people who drink excessively.

Alcohol also plays a major role in incidents of violent crime in the Borough. Almost half (43%) of all incidents of violent crime committed in Telford & Wrekin involved alcohol. The impact alcohol has on health and well-being covers issues such as mental health, physical injury, sexual health, child and maternal health, and accommodation.

Almost a third of local residents questioned in the 2007 West Mercia Crime and Safety Survey said that Drunken Disorder was one of their main concerns.
