What is Anti-Social Behaviour?

Anti-social behaviour (ASB) is a term which can be used to describe a range of unacceptable activities that have a negative impact on a community or individual. Broadly speaking, there are three types of ASB: street problems, nuisance neighbours and environmental ASB.

Examples of anti-social behaviour can include:

Criminal DamageVandalismNoise nuisanceThreatening or rowdy behaviour

Joy ridingThrowing missilesRacial/verbal abuseGraffitiFly-tipping • Littering

It is important to remember that it’s not just young people who are responsible for ASB.

There are many reasons that can increase the likelihood of someone committing ASB. Research has shown that these can include someone’s family environment, attendance and performance at school, accommodation, employment and the local community, and involvement in problem behaviour, illegal drugs and crime.

Who should I contact?

If ASB is affecting your community, tell your local Neighbourhood Coordinator about it:

What’s being done in my area?

There are a wide range of activities being carried out to tackle different types of ASB across the Borough. These include:

  • The use of the Respect Interventions Model to tackle ASB at the earliest stage to minimise the need for Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBO’s).
  • Clean Sweep campaigns regularly take place to involve residents in improving and tidying their local area with a particular focus on environmental work, education and enforcement activities.
  • PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meetings, organised by West Mercia Constabulary, have provided an opportunity for local communities to identify the priorities that matter to them in terms of ASB in their area.
  • Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service works with Schools across the Borough to promote fire safety messages and fire setter referral schemes aim to reduce offending by empowering young people.
  • A CCTV Strategy is currently being developed to combat ASB in the Borough.
