Business crime costs the West Midlands region £14,000 per hour, and is a serious threat to investment in the region. The Home Office estimate that crimes against the commercial and public sector is almost twice the estimated number of crimes against individuals and households. As much of this crime goes unreported however, police figures do not reveal the true extent of the problem.
Business crime affects profitability, deters investment and can hasten business closure. This in turn would impact on the wider community, and is a recognised factor in the decline of town centres and industrial estates. Areas are then deprived of much needed facilities and employment opportunities.
This partnership takes these issues seriously and have set up a business crime forum known as Safer Stronger Business Forum which consists of representatives of local commerce, the police and Local Authority who tackle crime issues head on. The aim is simple – to prevent and reduce crimes committed against businesses in the borough, and support initiatives that are focused to that end.
One Telford Safer Stronger Business Forum
The One Telford Safer Stronger Business Forum meets quarterly with representatives across the Business community coming together to work in partnership to achieve the following aims:
- addressing, preventing and tackling business crime through a partnership approach
- sharing best practice on business initiatives
- promote and support the message of Telford being a safe place to live and work
- build a strong network of contacts across the business sector
There are a number of businesses that are signed up to the groups that are already seeing the benefits for both staff and businesses.
