crime reduction

What is Crime?

Although crime is something that we often see of hear about in the news...

Telford is a safe place to live in, grow up in and work in.

In the 2007 West Mercia Crime and Safety Survey, less than a fifth of adults said that they had personally been a victim of crime in the last 12 months. However children and young people were more likely to have experienced a crime or problem (54%).

Despite this, people’s fear of crime remains significantly higher.

There are several key types of crime that agencies are working together in Telford & Wrekin to reduce. These include:

• Burglary Dwelling • Criminal Damage • Arson • Domestic Abuse

Hate Crime • Vehicle Crime • Violent Crime

What’s being done in my area?

There are a range of activities taking place to tackle key areas of criminal activity:

  • Residential burglaries – Dedicated policing resources are devoted to dealing with domestic burglary and ongoing trends are monitored and addressed by a number of agencies working together. Schemes such as Homesafe also offer assistance to repeat victims of burglaries
  • Criminal Damage and Arson – Multi-agency Clean Sweep campaigns have been used to target vulnerable areas and educational campaigns such as Crucial Crew, SPARKS, and “Don’t Damage Your Community” have been used to raise awareness amongst children and young people
  • Vehicle Crime – Vehicle crime levels are monitored by a multi-agency group and the local Police Division’s dedicated vehicle crime unit tackles offences, supported by seasonal awareness-raising campaigns
  • Violent Crime – Violent crime trends are monitored on an ongoing basis, and the newly developed Borough-wide CCTV and Alcohol strategies focus on links with street disorder and with Domestic Abuse. Ongoing arrangements also exist with licensed premises.
