08.07.08 - Telford CSOs praised by Chief Inspector
The work of two Community Support Officers (CSOs) in Telford has been praised following four arrests that came as a direct result of their quick thinking and calm communications skills. In two separate incidents CSO Trudy Jones from the Wellington North Local Policing Team (LPT) and CSO Lisa Nutting from the Haygate and Ercall LPT guided response police officers to their exact location where they witnessed crimes in progress so that arrests could be made.
Telford’s Chief Inspector of Local Policing Peter Davies said “These offenders would almost certainly have gone on to commit other crimes so the CSOs have not only reduced overall crime, but their intervention has meant that several fewer people have been the victims of car crime and all of the expense and misery that follows.”
Residents in two areas of Wellington are working with police and other organisations in a bid to provide more leisure activities for teenagers. The Wellington Youth Engagement Group (WYEG) recently sent out a questionnaire to residents living on both the Gas Works (Hollies Road) and Arleston estates, asking them about their concerns in the area in which they live and the facilities they would like to see, particularly for young people. Simultaneously a youth survey was carried out amongst 9 – 16 year olds. Nearly 300 replies were returned, with a good response from young people.
Sergeant Chris Miller, of the Wellington Local Policing Team, said: “There are several exciting ideas in the pipeline, with at least one project currently being planned for the summer holidays: a graffiti art project run by a local artist, Neil Willis. There will be a mural design workshop on 12th August followed by painting days on 20th and 21st August at local venues” If you would like to volunteer to help out with either project development or on working groups, please contact your Local Policing Team, or The Wrekin Housing Trust’s West Team based in Tan Bank, or Connexions 4 Youth at Ringway House.
A large scale traffic pile up on a county road put Shropshire’s emergency services to the test during a major training exercise on July 3. The multiple vehicle collision was acted out on a stretch of road at the Ministry Of Defence base in Donnington, Telford.
The exercise was designed to test the joint response by the Fire Service, Police, Ambulance Service, MOD, and St John Ambulance. “The whole purpose of these types of exercises is to test our response methods in detail particularly how we work together during a rescue operation and this is an ideal way of achieving that aim. A multiple vehicle pile up is something that can easily happen on any of our Shropshire roads,” said Group Manager Glenn Holloway, of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Over 1000 children from Telford & Wrekin have recently learnt new skills to keep themselves safe during two weeks of activities at the Crucial Crew event at Buildwas Abbey. The interactive event, managed by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service on behalf of the Telford & Wrekin Safer & Stronger Communities Partnership, enabled young people to take part in a range of scenarios designed to increase their awareness of their own personal safety.
The event, which has been running for the last 15 years, has enabled over 16,000 young people from local schools to take part in hands-on activities outside of their school environment. This mixture of learning about serious issues in new and exciting ways makes the event especially popular with the young people that attend it. The two-week event took place in the grounds of Buildwas Abbey, near Ironbridge, and was hosted by E.ON UK.
