Your Community Matters
The first ‘Your Community Matters’ event took place in October at the Park Lane Centre in Woodside where residents were invited to have their say at a public information event.
'Your Community Matters' gives people the chance to find out more about their local services and an opportunity to speak, face-to-face, with those who deliver them.
The event offers service providers, such as West Mercia Police, West Mercia Police Authority, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, Wrekin Housing Trust and Telford & Wrekin Primary Care Trust, as well as community groups and a wide range of Telford & Wrekin Council services, the chance to inform the public of their work and asking local people for advice and support. The events are part of a programme of public events across the whole of the Telford and Wrekin area to listen to the views of local people.
Others ‘Your Community Matters’ events are taking place in :
- Wellington at the Whitehouse Hotel on 19 January 2009.
Events in Central Telford and in Newport are also planned for Spring 2009. Details of dates and venues will be circulated nearer the time.
All events are free to attend and there is no need to book.
On Tuesday, 25th November, 2008 The Safer & Stronger Communities Partnership held a display within the Town Centre from 9 am – 5.30 pm in support of Womens Aid. The event was also supported by the Telford Tigers and the Town Centre.
The White Ribbon Campaign is the largest effort Internationally of working to end men's violence against women. It relies on volunteer support and financial contributions from individuals and organizations.
The UK Branch of the White Ribbon Campaign was started in 2004 and although concerned about all forms of violence, their central focus is on men’s violence against women. When comparing violence committed by women and men, the British Crime Survey notes that the result of men’s violence is five times as likely to require medical attention. Women are four times as likely as men to fear for their lives, and three and a half times as likely to be murdered by a male spouse than vice versa.
CCTV working in partnership with Telford and Wrekin Council and Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council
On the 27th November 2008 the official launch of the Shrewsbury and Telford CCTV working Partnership took place in the Large Meeting room, Guildhall, Frankwell Quay Shrewsbury.
Shrewsbury and Telford have agreed on a service level agreement for Shrewsbury CCTV control to monitor 60 CCTV cameras across Shropshire’s two biggest towns following a £260,000 investment programme (£100,000 in Shrewsbury and £160,000 in Telford).
Shrewsbury’s CCTV control centre is pro-active monitoring Oakengates, Wellington and Dawley to help increase public confidence and reduce anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related violence. To support the service level agreement Shrewsbury CCTV control centre has been given approval for a refurbishment with new equipment. Shrewsbury CCTV control will now take on monitoring for 30 CCTV cameras in the Telford, which will continue to monitor a further 30 cameras in the Shrewsbury area, including three new ones which are being installed at Greyfriars, St Alkmund’s Square and at the Guildhall in Frankwell.
The partnership has been developed through Telford and Shrewsbury Safer & Stronger Community partnerships working together to drive CCTV into a new arena, that will help to provide a 24/7 professional CCTV monitoring for public reassurance, collate criminal evidence and to build a more efficient and effective CCTV service.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are launching a high profile festive safety campaign focusing on two areas.
- ' A Shropshire Family will be devastated this Christmas'
- Road Safety - Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service will be working in partnership with Local Authority Road Safety Team and Safer Roads Partnership.
The campaign will be launched at the Telford Shopping Centre on Thursday 4th December for four days, with a display site featuring fire safety and road safety posters and leaflets and will be followed by three events in Shrewsbury at a number of venues across the town, running Monday 8th December to Wednesday 10th December.

Telford & Wrekin Safer & Stronger Communities Partnership have launched a new anti car crime initiative with the Town Centre.
The popular Town Centre in conjunction with West Mercia Constabulary are asking motorists not to become complacent about car crime especially during the holiday period with the launch of a vehicle security campaign.
The ‘Out of Sight – Out of Mind Scheme’ involves the Police and Town Centre security staff working together to try to prevent thefts from cars by keeping a look out for vehicles offering easy pickings to thieves. How can you help ?…Simple ; never leave valuables visible in your car.
The scheme involves taking the registration numbers and makes of "vulnerable" vehicles and passing them on to administrators at the West Mercia Constabulary. In turn, they will write to the owners of the vehicles pointing out the risk to their possessions and offer some basic security advice.
Most vehicle crime is opportunistic and happens as a result of a vehicle being left vulnerable or unsecured, e.g.
- Doors or windows left unlocked
- Keys left in the ignition
- Personal belongings on display (e.g. handbag, laptop)
- Sat nav and holder left in vehicle
- Parked in a poorly lit area
The advice below will provide you with some tips on how you can outsmart car thieves. Following these simple steps will help us to reduce vehicle crime even further and save you the hassle and expense of having to repair any damage caused during a vehicle break-in.
Ensure windows, sunroof and boot are all secured and doors locked when leaving your vehicle unattended, no matter how briefly
- Take keys with you when leaving the vehicle unattended
- Remove any valuables and personal belongings from the vehicle
- Remove your sat nav and its cradle and wipe away any sucker marks

- Fit an alarm or immobiliser
- Activate the steering lock – whenever and wherever you park
- Have the vehicle registration number etched on each of the windows
- Postcode your vehicle stereo using an ultraviolet marker
